MUSIC:

A follow-up to The Great Enthusiasms, Refuge is a new trio recording with Sam on violin, Jacob Sacks on piano, and Michael Sarin on piano. "Bardfeld is a sublimely versatile player...one needn’t look past his own tunes to appreciate his art” (Peter Margasak). “The great thing here is the way unity is created. It … is so free, daring, fast and accurate that one is flabbergasted by the reinforcing and inclusive effect” (Henning Bolte). “Really beautiful” (Peter Watrous).

Periodic Trespasses (the saul cycle)

(Fresh Sounds 2005)

A quintet lineup with Sam on violin, Ron Horton on trumpet, Tom Beckham on vibes, Sean Conly on bass and Satoshi Takeishi on drums. Time Out’s Kelvin Williams said, “Bardfeld is a marvelously gifted violinist, composer and arranger… Periodic Trespasses' unveils Bardfeld as a composer of quirky but accessible melodies as well as a lyrically gifted soloist...as well as being one of today's more delightfully eccentric characters."

Latin Violin: How to Play Salsa, Charanga and Latin Jazz Violin

My 2001 book Latin Violin: How to Play Salsa, Charanga and Latin Jazz Violin, is now available as an eBook and print-on-demand paperback. Considered one of the classics of the creative/alt-strings literature, Latin Violin is clear and practical while also providing in-depth historical and musicological context. The book features 14 solo transcriptions and an accompanying audio file with most of the original solo tracks in addition to play-along tracks.

“It’s very satisfying that Sam Bardfeld’s contribution to the texts on Latin music comes out of the gate so strongly. The historical context is wonderful, the information about the overall structure of the music is invaluable and a great place for the violinist to start, and the transcriptions are beautiful. Congratulations on a wonderful project that is going to fill a vacuum that is vast and fill it completely. I see no reason for there ever to be another book besides this one on Latin violin playing” Matt Glaser, Chairperson-Emeritus, Strings Department, Berklee College of Music
